How to prepare your child for starting nursery

How to prepare your child for starting nursery

Starting nursery is a big step — for both children and parents. Whether it’s your child’s first time away from home or simply a new routine, it’s completely normal to feel a little uncertain about how things will go.

At Little Ferns Nursery Wendover, we’re often asked for advice on preparing your child for nursery — especially in the weeks leading up to their first day. The good news is that a little preparation goes a long way in helping children feel secure and settled when they arrive.

Here are some simple, practical starting nursery tips to support your child’s transition.

1. Talk positively about nursery

Children pick up on how we feel, so try to keep your tone upbeat and confident when talking about nursery. Share what they might do during the day, such as playing outside, painting, or listening to stories. You might say, “There are toys and friends to play with,” or “Your key person will look after you while I’m at work.”

2. Practise short separations

If your child hasn’t spent much time away from you, it can help to practise short goodbyes in the weeks before they start nursery. This might be staying with a grandparent or trusted friend for a couple of hours. Keep the goodbye calm and positive, and always let them know you’re coming back.

3. Use picture books and play

Gentle picture books about starting nursery can help children understand what to expect and make the unknown feel more familiar. You can also use teddies or dolls to act out saying goodbye, playing, and being picked up again.

4. Create a consistent routine

Children feel more secure when they know what’s coming next. In the lead-up to nursery, try to establish a consistent morning routine — for example, breakfast, getting dressed, and packing their bag together. This helps ease the transition into nursery life.

5. Give time to settle

It’s completely normal for some children to take a little longer to adjust. At Little Ferns Nursery Wendover, we offer a gradual and supportive settling into nursery process that responds to each child’s individual needs. We’ll work closely with you to make the transition as smooth as possible, starting with short visits and plenty of reassurance.

Every child is different, but with patience, support, and clear routines, most children settle happily into nursery life. And remember — it’s okay if it takes time. We’re here to support both you and your child every step of the way.
